Wisdom Teeth Extraction

Wisdom Teeth are often referred to as the ‘third molars’ and are usually the final teeth to emerge, with some people developing all four, and others none.

As wisdom teeth develop through the course of a couple of years, any complications can be slow in developing, but result in sudden and severe pain. The majority of complications occur for one of two reasons; that the emerging wisdom teeth become impacted, or only partially erupt.

Impacted wisdom teeth develop when there is not enough room for the teeth to emerge, or they emerge at a different angle resulting in them growing into other teeth or the surrounding jaw bone and soft tissue. Not only can this result in pain and discomfort, but if left untreated can also create crowding of the teeth and a misalignment of the jaw.

Partially erupted wisdom teeth become problematic as they can leave a small pocket of gum exposed and vulnerable to painful, recurrent infection. Consequently, this may lead to the development of decay and gum (periodontal) disease.

The commonly recommended treatment for this complication is the extraction of the problematic wisdom teeth. This can usually be completed at our practice with the use of a local anaesthetic, however for more complicated procedures, or anxious patients this can be done under General Anaesthetic at Westminister Day Surgery
