Crowns and Bridges
What are Dental Crowns and Tooth Bridges?
Crowns and bridges are fixed prosthetic devices, which can offer an effective, durable, functional and aesthetically pleasing solution to one or many missing teeth. They also be a more permanent solution than dentures, as crowns and bridges are cemented onto existing teeth or dental implants.
At Painless Dental we have current technology at our fingertips which allows us to fashion your mouth with crowns, veneers and ceramic fillings all in a single visit using CAD (Computer Aided Design/ CAM (Computer Aided Milling)) technology our CEREC machine can have your restorations ready for you in a single visit. This enhances the patient experience as it removes the lengthy waiting period apparent in more traditional techniques.
How do Crowns work?
A crown comes in two types. The first is a thin cap which is placed over an existing, damaged tooth to restore its original shape, strength, function and appearance. The second is a full restoration crown (new tooth). This type of crown is affixed to a dental implant to provide the full functionality, strength and appearance of a natural tooth. Predominantly made from porcelain materials, crowns can be technically coloured to precisely match your existing teeth.
Crowns are often recommended to
- replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining.
- protect a weak tooth from fracturing.
- restore a fractured tooth.
- attach a bridge.
- cover a dental implant.
- cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth.
- cover a toot that has had root canal treatment.
How do Bridges work?
A bridge is an effective restorative method for multiple missing teeth. This is because the gaps left by missing teeth eventually cause the remaining teeth to rotate or shift into the empty spaces resulting in poor tooth alignment and a bad bite. This imbalance can often result in gum disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Anchored to surrounding teeth or crowns, bridges are used to ‘bridge’ the gap where teeth are missing.
